elōs Technology Mechanism of Action

Intrinsic and particularly extrinsic aging processes are both responsible for the numerous visible signs of skin aging, which can be characterized by the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, skin laxity, uneven skin texture, solar lentigines, dyspigmentation, and increased pore size, among other cutaneous signs. Many of these cutaneous manifestations are due to a steady decrease in the production of collagen and elastic fibers as well as architectural changes in the collagen fiber network, which results in thinning of the dermis as time progresses.

Ablation

Absorption
Absorption is the transformation of radiant energy to another form of energy (usually heat) by interacting with matter.
Acne scars
Appears in some patients as a result of the healing process of acne.
Acne Vulgaris
A common dermatological disorder that predominantly affects teenagers, but can also affect pre-adolescents and post-teen individuals.
Bi-polar RF
Radiofrequency energy transmitted from two electrodes to a single target. The electrical circuit in this case runs between the two electrodes, thus maintaining control over energy’s depth of penetration.
Chromophore
A chromophore is an endogenous light-absorbing particle, which absorbs light of a specific wavelength.
Coagulation
The process of changing from a liquid to a gel or solid state by a series of chemical reactions.
Collagen
As the most abundant protein in the human body, it is regarded as the substance that holds the whole body together and can be found in the bones, muscles, skin and tendons. Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid form the “building blocks” of the skin.
Denature
To destroy the characteristic properties of a protein (like collagen or elastin) by heat.
Dermis
A thick layer of supportive connective tissue below the epidermis.
Elastin
A protein in connective tissue that is elastic and allows many tissues in the body to resume their shape after stretching or contracting. Elastin helps skin to return to its original position when it is poked or pinched.

A revolutionary step forward in the practice of aesthetic medicine. elōs enables a safer and deeper penetrating combination of optical (laser or pulsed light) and radio frequency energies.
Energy fluence
The energy contained within light is expressed in Joules (J). The energy fluence determines the amount of laser energy delivered in a single pulse and is expressed in Joules/cm2.
Epidermis
The outer layer of the skin.
Neocollagenesis
Creation and inducement of new collagen within the skin. Only with Profound, the real-time temperature under the skin can be monitored and the optimal thermal profile (temperature and time) be created to partially denature collagen in the dermis (layer under the epidermis). Partially denatured (destroyed) collagen heals faster than completely denatured collagen. During the healing process, new collagen is formed and creates visibly smoother skin with improved skin laxity.
Neoelastogenesis
Creation and inducement of new elastin within connective tissue, similar to the process of neocollagenesis.
Optical Energy
Light or laser energy that can be delivered to a target tissue and is converted to thermal energy for therapeutic purposes.
Post-inflammatory pigmentation
Darkening of the skin pigment due to increased amounts of melanin, usually occurs during the healing process after treatment of skin of darker skin types.
Pulse
A pulse is the brief span of time for which the laser beam interacts with a given target on the skin (usually in milliseconds, nanoseconds and now picoseconds). Typically, when operating a laser in single pulse mode, a single pulse is emitted each time the finger switch or foot switch is pressed.
Radio frequency (RF)
Radio frequency (RF) is a rate of oscillation in the range of about 3 kHz to 300 GHz, which corresponds to the frequency of radio waves, and the alternating currents which carry radio signals. RF usually refers to electrical rather than mechanical oscillations, although mechanical RF systems do exist.

A frequency of electromagnetic radiation in the range at which radio signals are transmitted, ranging from approximately 3 kilohertz to 300 gigahertz.
Reticular dermis
The lower layer of the dermis, found under the papillary dermis, composed of dense irregular connective tissue featuring densely packed collagen fibers. It is the primary location of dermal elastic fibers.
Selective photothermolysis
A concept used to localize thermal injury to a specific target based on its absorption characteristics, the wavelength of light used, the duration of the pulse, and the amount of energy delivered.
Striae Albae
Chronic stage, characterized by white or hypo-pigmented, atrophic Striae.
Striae Distensae
Striae or stretch marks are areas of skin that look like bands, stripes, or lines. They first appear as reddish or purple lines, but tend to gradually fade to a lighter range.
Striae Rubrae
The acute stage characterized by raised, erythematous Striae.
Sublative Radiofrequency Treatment
A process by which thermal wounds are created in a nonhomogeneous fractional form in the upper dermis. In the case of Sublative RF treatment, fractional bipolar RF energy is delivered via a matrix of electrodes.
